The term “mounting” can sometimes cause confusion when talking about it in picture framing. In picture framing, “mounting” refers to the technique, boards and adhesive used to adhere your artwork to a backing board. The techniques range from preservation mounting to completely not preservation and solely decorative.
No mounting technique is truly reversible. Therefore, this point is highly important and valuable to understand. Yes, there are ways to separate items mounted to backing boards using strong adhesives but the damage that the removal would cause to the artwork, due to chemical compounds that would need to be used can be detrimental to the artwork. This makes mounting extremely valuable to understand.
There are several methods that can be used in most frame shops, including dry (heat), wet, spray and pressure sensitive adhesives. Different types of mounting are suitable for different types of art.
